Situated approximately 250km north of Brisbane, and a short 10 minute ferry trip from Rainbow Bay, is the world’s largest sandy island – K’gari (Fraser Island). Meaning ‘paradise’ in the local indigenous language, the island’s remarkable natural beauty and unique environment has also been recognised internationally since 1992 as a World Heritage Area.
There is much to do and appreciate here; perhaps visit the world’s largest perched lake, Lake Boomanjin, which extends nearly 200 ha or swim in the azure waters of Lake Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie). Let the crystal clear current of Eli Creek float you under an arbour of tropical vegetation before depositing you at the beach or wander through the towering rainforest at Central Station or Valley of the Giants. Contemplate how the pinnacles were formed or wander around the shipwreck ruins of the S.S. Maheno.
Dingoes can be spotted hugging the vegetation line along the beach and dolphin fins breaching in the nearshore waters. Another way to appreciate the island is from air; take a scenic flight from one of only two places in the world that have a beach runway. Access is 4WD only so come prepared or join a tour.
